西贡区位于香港东部沿海，总面积12,680公顷，包括西贡半岛南部、清水湾半岛、将军澳新市镇及东面水域内的 70 多个岛屿，是香港十八区中面积第五大的区份。95%人口集中在将军澳新市镇。西贡被誉为香港的后花园，因为本区大部份地方都没有开发，成为市民日常郊游的好去处。西贡区的范围包括西贡、坑口乡郊及将军澳。以面积计,是本港第二大的行政区。西贡区位于新界东南，包括乡郊和新市镇部份，以及数十个大小不一的岛屿。区内除保留了乡村的传统民风习俗，同时亦具备新巿镇的朝气和活力。在高速的都巿化过程中，西贡乡郊难得仍保存了秀丽的天然景色，素有“香港后花园”的美誉。区内的将军澳，已从六十年代的一个小渔村及造船业地区，发展成为今天约有三十万人口的主要新市镇，充分体现了西贡区富有冲劲和活力的一面。
在清朝时期，所有由西方进入中国的商船、贡船必须在西贡的佛堂洲完税方可进入中国海域。因此，西贡这地方的命名就是指从西方来的贡船。
清朝初期迁界时，西贡这个地域范围曾短暂归并入东莞县，但不久重设新安县，此地亦重归新安县官富司的管辖。1898年英国租借新界，并设南约、北约两个理民府管理新界。1942年日本人占领香港，实行分区管治，才有西贡区的设立，当时的西贡区包括今日西贡北约乡事委员会、西贡区乡事委员会及坑口乡事委员会所属私范围。第二次世界大战后，理民府制度恢复。
