海天堂构是鼓浪屿上惟一按照中轴线对称布局的别墅建筑群，是菲律宾华侨黄秀悢于1859年出生于晋江深沪，他后来到菲律宾去谋生，经过20多年的奋斗终于成为富商。1899年，黄秀悢回国后定居鼓浪屿。上世纪20年代初，黄秀悢与同乡建造了五幢对称的中西合璧楼群，在楼群正门的门楼横匾上书写“海天堂构”四个大字，以示楼群规模宏大。海天堂构是中西方文化结合的典范之作。门楼是典型中国传统式样，重檐斗拱、飞檐翘角。这种中国屋顶压住西洋主体的建筑，据称是中国人对外国人的一种发泄。
